WMS wraps up its first year of Safe School Ambassador program

Washingtonville Middle School celebrated the completion of its first year running the Safe School Ambassadors (SSA) program, an initiative to help students prevent and stop bullying, mistreatment and other harmful behaviors amongst their peer population.

Led by WMS faculty Jaclyn Clark, Carole Allegro and Jenna Korn, the goal of the SSA program is to foster strong connections between student ambassadors and staff leaders, build peer support networks and equip students with the tools to process emotions and promote a positive, inclusive school climate.

Earlier this year, 35 students took part in a two-day training session, participating in lessons on how to recognize conflict, respond with empathy and intervene in ways that de-escalate tension and promote understanding.

One recent success story highlights the SSA’s impact. After overhearing a conversation of a potential fight, an SSA member stepped in, encouraging the students involved to talk it out instead of resorting to violence. The ambassador then reported the situation to a staff member, allowing administrators to provide support before the conflict escalated.

Looking ahead, next year’s plans include monthly activities to increase SSA member’s invisibility and involvement. In addition, two gardens will be sprouting up in front of the middle school – symbolizing the growing leadership instilled in Washingtonville’s next generation.

“The program is an amazing opportunity to see the potential of all students,” Ms. Korn said. “Whether you are an average grade student, or a student who goes above and beyond, there is space for all in the SSA program.”
