WMS hosts presentation by The Alcohol and Drug Awareness Council of Orange County followed by Open House

The Washingtonville Middle School hosted the first of two open houses on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, and began the event with a presentation from the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Council of Orange County (ADAC).

The ADAC brings awareness to current trends in substance abuse among students and young adults. Some of these include the use of vaping, alcohol, cannabis and other drugs. This presentation allowed families to gain information on how to deal with these issues and what resources are available. The ADAC urged the community to be aware and have those uncomfortable conversations with their children.

“Middle school is a time of transition,” said Teresa Thompson, principal at the middle school. “Kids are trying to figure things out, find themselves and test boundaries. It is never too early to start these conversations.”

“The safety of the children is the most important thing,” she continued. “We as a community really have to work in partnership.”

Parents reflected on the presentation too, surprised by the information they learned.

“It was really eye-opening,” said Mary Phillips, mother of sixth-grader Brianna. “It is scary to see what they can hide and it is very desirable to teens. We will definitely be having those conversations.”

After the presentation, parents were able to follow their child’s schedule to meet each of their teachers and get familiar with the building. Teachers welcomed parents by introducing themselves and going over the overall classwork and expectations.

“It is great to see what the hallways look like,” said Dave Phillips, father of Brianna. “It is very different from elementary school.”

Eighth-grade students from the National Junior Honor Society were also there to help direct families around the building.

“I love what I teach and I love the sixth grade,” said Christine Goodenough, sixth-grade teacher. “I am really excited for this year.”

Tomorrow evening, Thursday, September 14, 2023, the Washingtonville Middle School will be hosting another presentation from ADAC at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium followed by the Open House for families of seventh and eighth graders.
